But right at the end of the tunnel comes the light. The bravery and courage of Paul to fight all illnesses and adversities and go on living in spite of all his handicaps, becoming a happy young man enjoying life at his own pace, make everything else seem to pale into insignificance. If he could speak, he would surely say, “My life is worth living!”

Big Pharma have been riding roughshod over common folk for decades.
Making huge profits from their products and doing their damndest to oppose any other approaches to healthcare other than pills, pills and more expensive pills.
But just occasionally their despicable tactics get found out and this week we saw one of their number have had their collars felt.
Britian’s biggest drugmaker has been asked about their conduct and, once more, been found wanting.
Basically, and not to put too fine a point on it, they have been bribing doctors to sell their products.
In the last three years they have faced the same charges from activities in the UK, China, the US and now Poland.
A BBC Panorama report has uncovered the story about 11 doctors and a senior GSK employee being hauled up in front of the courts in Poland with the prospect of many years detention more than likely.
More than that this prosecution of key employees could also see the entire group being challenged under the UK Bribery Act and US Foreign Corrupt Practices Act – and that has got the fat cats all of a fluster.
This isn’t the first time that they have been in this situation.
A series of bribery and corruption allegations have been circulating since early 2010 but it doesn’t seem like the wrist slaps they suffered as a result have made much difference to them.
Maybe a proper financial and legal sanction will stop them in their shoddy tracks.
Here’s how their little scam works.
The prospect of a drugs rep arriving at your local GP’s practice with a brown envelope stuffed with cash is perhaps an idea none of us would be comfortable with.
However, the subtle way the drugs companies work with doctors means the end result is very much the same.
You see, as a reward for pushing out their version of an asthma drug the GSK country managers pay the GP for delivering conference papers on their behalf.
A nice little earner you might say, with the details of how it works coming to light because of a bit of whistle blowing by an ex-employee.
A former sales rep for GSK in the Polish region of Lodz, Jarek Wisniewski, said: “There is a simple equation. We pay doctors, they give us prescriptions. We don’t pay doctors, we don’t see prescriptions for our drugs.”
In the BBC report he is further quoted as saying:
“We cannot go to doctors and say to them, ‘I need 20 more prescriptions’. So we prepare an agreement for them to give a talk to patients, we pay £100, but we expect more than 100 prescriptions for this drug.”
“It’s a bribe”, Mr Wisniewski said, confirming that although on paper the payments were for educational services, the doctors understood very clearly that they must produce a certain number of prescriptions in return.
It was exactly the same tactic used by the company in China in 2013 when a £300m scandal was uncovered involving a network of over 700 middlemen and travel agencies, to bribe doctors and lawyers with cash and even sexual favours.
In 2012, GSK paid $3bn (£1.9bn) in the largest healthcare fraud settlement in US history after pleading guilty to promoting two drugs for unapproved uses and failing to report safety data about a diabetes drug to the Food and Drug Administration.
And if they are doing it in those regions you can be sure it is happening right across their organisation – even here in the UK.
I echo the call from Ben Goldacre in 2013 after the Chinese scandal broke where he said:
“Doctors should be responsible for declaring their own conflicts of interest on a simple register, ideally run by the General Medical Council, in the same way MPs do. If we believe these payments and this free education are ok, then we should tell our patients with a polite notice in the waiting room.”
This would mean we would see who has been putting the money up for our doctors and could then reasonably decide if we were being advised to take drug X rather than drug Y on medical or financial grounds.
Which brings me to my pet hate. Statins.
Earlier I said I supported Ben Goldacre in his stand against drug company bribery in our GP clinics, but not everything he says is good news.
A few weeks ago I told you about the dodgy report he had put his name to supporting the wholesale prescription of cholesterol lowering statin drugs to everyone over the age of 40.
I am absolutely against the indiscriminate medication of the general population in this way, but the drug pushers say that the science shows that anyone with a greater than 10% risk of a cardiovascular incident will benefit from daily statin use.
Of course the first question is ‘how do I know if I have a greater than 10% risk of heart trouble?’
Well if we are to believe the hype, that accounts for all of us over the age of 40, especially if our blood pressure is a bit high, or our cholesterol levels a touch strong or even have blood sugar that occasionally spikes.
Just about everyone then!
Then I listened to a BBC Four programme that put those numbers into context…
…using the simplest of mathematics they showed that even if we did all take statins one person in every 140 would be prevented from having a cardiovascular problem – this is known as the Number Needed To Treat.
Most experts in this area agree that if this number gets above 100 then the justification for a drugs use is questionable – so why are we being urged to take statins then?
Maybe this is further evidence that the companies who stand to gain are working in more devious ways once again.

We all want to keep fit and healthy, but as we age, sometimes it gets more difficult to carry out strenuous exercises, but you can still keep your body moving by going for a brisk 20 minute walk and trying to increase the length of the walk over a period of time. Also, when you perform an exercise, just try and do a little more each time and over a period of time, this will make a big difference to your health and your body.
Don’t overdo it though as you are likely to pull muscles, just do what you can and increase the exercise or repetitions over time.
A complete fitness program should include the following:
Walking, jogging, cycling, swimming and dance exercise are good ones to try. Aerobic exercise works the large muscles in your body, benefitting your cardiovascular system – and your weight.
Work up to getting 20 or more minutes per session, three or four days a week. Make sure you can pass the ‘talk test’ which means exercising at a pace that lets you carry on a conversation.
Lifting hand weights improves your strength and posture, maintains bone strength, reduces the risk of lower back injury and also helps you tone.
Start with a hand weight that you can comfortably handle for eight repetitions. Gradually add more repetitions until you can complete twelve.
StretchingStretching exercises help maintain flexibility and range of motion in joints. They also reduce the risk of injury and muscle soreness. Yoga and Pilates are good forms of stretching exercise; they build core body strength and increase stability.
We can also increase our energy by giving our bodies the best nutrition possible and this is undoubtedly from fruit and vegetables. Experts recommend that we have at least 5 a-day of fruit and vegetables in order to give our bodies the essential nutrients we need, but sometimes it is not easy to do this and now this recommendation has been increased from 5 a-day to 7-9.

I personally have been taking this product since the beginning of July 2015 and have lost over 1 stone in weight so far by taking the product and making a few simple changes to my diet. Sixteen Victorian ‘strainer’ arches, thought to be one of only two surviving examples of their type in England, have been saved from demolition in a collaboration between English Heritage and Network Rail. Built in 1843 on the Bolton and Preston Railway the arches braced a railway cutting in Chorley, Lancashire. They were at risk of being lost forever to enable a £400 million project to electrify the line.
To save the arches from demolition English Heritage and Network Rail agreed the stone arches would be carefully recorded in situ, then removed to secure storage and temporarily replaced with steel versions. Now works are nearing completion the original arches have been reinstated in a slightly higher position to allow the installation of electrification equipment through the tunnel.

Cathy Tuck, English Heritage Heritage at Risk Project Officer for the North West, said: “These arches are an important example of Victorian innovation. They were needed to strengthen the retaining walls of the cutting as it was feared that the clay behind might force the walls inwards causing them to collapse on the trains. It was a rarely used but very elegant solution.”
John Johnson, Project Manager at Network Rail, said: “This project is part of a £1bn+ investment to provide a better railway and boost the economy across the north of England. We are upgrading a Victorian railway, and it is important that we maintain that link to its heritage. We have worked closely with English Heritage to make sure that the Chorley flying arches have been reinstated in their rightful place.”
The original arches are being replaced with the addition of a permanent slender steel brace under each arch to meet modern safety regulations. This marriage between historic aesthetics and 21st century structural safety margins has allowed Network Rail to run the line to modern standards while preserving the appearance and significance of the original arches.

There can be few more iconic locations for an air warfare museum than Lashenden/Headcorn aerodrome. Although its history goes back to the 1920’s, it will be remembered as a World War Two Advanced Landing Ground. The aerodrome was first used for private general aviation in 1927 and remained so until 1942 when it was requisitioned by the Airfields Board and prepared for military use.
The original intention was to create a light bomber base, including a bomb storage area but this was never to be. Lashenden (as it became known) was subsequently prepared for use as an Advanced Landing Ground, operating fighter aircraft in accordance with the Air Staff’s plans to support the proposed invasion of occupied Europe. Two grass runways of 1,600yds and 1,400yds were made available and covered in a steel mesh known as Sommerfeld Tracking. This enabled aircraft to operate in all but the most atrocious weather conditions. Similar ALG’s were created at Staplehurst, Egerton (although confusingly called Headcorn!), Ashford, Brenzett, High Halden, Kingsnorth, Lydd, Newchurch, New Romney and Woodchurch. Lashenden became known as Station 410.
It was on the 6th August 1943, that 127 Wing Royal Canadian Air Force comprising No’s 403 and 421 Squadrons arrived with their Spitfire IXb’s, but their stay was short and by the end of the month they had moved on. On the 15th April 1944, the airfield became the responsibility of the 100th Fighter Wing, 19th Tactical Air Command, 9th Air Force. The Americans had arrived ! On the 17th April, the 354th Fighter Group flew in comprising the 353rd, 355th and 356th Fighter Squadrons with their North American P51B Mustangs. The 354th flew bomber escort missions, some as far as the Polish border and later, fighter bomber operations against targets in Northern France designed to disrupt German communications. During the D-Day landings in Normandy on the 6th June 1944, the 354th escorted troop carrying C47’s to the battle area. On the 18th June 1944, the 354th left Lashenden for Criqueville on the French coast, with the airfield subsequently being handed back to civilian ownership. With the resurgence of interest in civil aviation in the 1950’s, the airfield was opened as a base for private and commercial flying and has been thriving ever since.
The Lashenden Air Warfare Museum has been a permanent resident on the aerodrome since 1970 and has expanded at a steady pace with the collections of a number of preservation and recovery groups being acquired on the demise of these groups.

In 2007, the Museum embarked on a major project aimed at the complete restoration of its rare Fieseler Fi130R-4 “Reichenberg”. Resembling a V1, “Doodlebug”, these missiles were fitted with a small cockpit and intended for precision attacks on targets of importance although never actually used operationally. Restoration of the “Reichenberg” was completed in 2013, when the missile was returned to the Museum.
£40,000 is needed – Can you help?
In order to display the “Reichenberg” together with other related exhibits, the Museum is currently in the process of funding and constructing a new display hall. The sum of £40,000 is still needed to complete this exciting development and donations from the public will be very much appreciated and greatly assist the project.
The Museum is situated in the south east corner of the airfield and is open both Saturdays, Sundays and Bank Holiday during the summer months. Limited opening times apply during other periods and visitors should check the Museum website, www.lashendenairwarfaremuseum.co.uk for details. There is no admission charge to view one of the UK’s leading aviation archaeology collections.

1 Underlying Provisions

(including, amongst others, www.suncity50plusclub.com and www.suncity-retirement-villages.com) – hereinafter referred to as “Sun City Europe”.
(2) These provisions define the terms and conditions under which Sun City 50 Plus Club is to be used. These General Terms and Conditions shall apply exclusively to all users of www.suncity50plusclub.com.
(3) By registering with www.SunCity50plusClub.com, the user confirms in a binding way that he/she has read and understood these General Terms and Conditions and agrees herewith. If he/she does not agree with these General Terms and Conditions, then he/she must forego registration. Persons who are not at least 48 years old may not use this service.
(4) Sun City 50 Plus Club is an Internet platform which provides users with information plus various products and services and facilitates establishment of communication with other parties. Unless expressly specified otherwise, all new offerings, which extend or improve the current services, including the offer of new services, shall be subject to these General Terms and Conditions. (7) During the term of the Agreement, Sun City Europe cannot guarantee that contacts to other parties on the forum can be successfully made. Sun City Europe obligates itself only to attempt to facilitate such contacts, however, without guaranteeing the success of such efforts. As a consequence, Sun City Europe shall not be liable in case no contacts are made during the term of the Agreement.
(8) Each user shall exempt Sun City Europe from liability of any kind and from all obligations, costs and claims which may result from detriments due to defamatory statements, insults, invasion of personal privacy, non-availability of services for the user, damage to intangible assets or violations of other rights. All costs incurred by service provider and/or its executive personnel, directors, salaried employees, representatives and/or third parties in connection with the above for a reasonable legal defence and prosecution proceedings vis-à-vis third parties shall be at the expense of the user.
2 Privacy Policy
(1) The security and protection of user data are matters of particular importance for Sun City Europe. Sun City Europe shall comply with the UK statutory regulations regarding data protection, including but not limited to the Data Protection Act.
(2) In accordance with the Data Protection Act users are herewith informed that Sun City Europe stores user data in machine-readable form and processes such data by machine.
(3) Within the framework of the contractually agreed provision of services, some personal data is collected, stored, processed and utilised. This usually includes members names and email address. Data is electronically stored. Sun City Europe shall not disclose individual personal data to third parties.
(4) Upon user request, Sun City Europe shall provide complete information about stored data at any time and at no charge, insofar as such data relates to user. This information shall be provided in written form. The request for information must be submitted in writing to Sun City Europe Ltd, Glenwood, Maltmans Hill, Smarden, Kent TN27 8RF United Kingdom.
(5) Personal settings entered by user shall be stored. This ensures that each user’s personal settings are available for use during each new session (for each new log-on). To accomplish this, Sun City 50 Plus Club normally uses cookies. These cookies are permanently stored by user’s browser on his/her own hard disk. In order to prevent this, user can make corresponding settings in the browser.
(6) The user expressly agrees to receive Email newsletters. These newsletters are an integral part of the service and regularly inform user about current topics and new items in connection with Sun City 50 Plus Club. In addition, member-specific reports are also sent. The newsletter may be unsubscribed at any time using the link at the end of the respective newsletter.
(7) By completing registration, user agrees to the use of his/her data as described in the above provisions.
3 Completion of the Agreement
(1) User declares vis-à-vis Sun City 50 Plus Club that he/she is at least 48 years old.
(2) The Agreement shall become effective as soon as user has successfully registered himself/herself in Sun City 50 Plus Club.
4 Costs
(1) Registration and membership in Sun City 50 Plus Club is free, however there are limitations to the use of the club. In particular, only paying members (Full Members) are able to benefit from discounts offered in the club or within its services.
(2) At any time, users may upgrade their Free Membership to Full Membership by agreeing to the membership fees charged and supplying their method of payment details for monthly membership. Additional benefits are then automatically triggered.
5 Payment Terms
(1) Payment of the membership fees specified shall be made in advance without any kind of deduction to Sun City Europe. The amount shall be automatically debited from user’s bank account, charged to his/her credit/debit card through Paypal. If a Full Membership has been agreed, the payment interval shall be 30 days or a multiple thereof, depending upon the validity period selected.
(2) Upon registration and entry of the corresponding bank account or credit card data, user thereby grants Sun City Europe direct debit authorization for the direct debit procedure or credit card charging.
(3) Full Membership is automatically renewed at the end of each term until cancellation. The user may cancel Full Membership subscriptions at any time by cancelling the payment instructions with their bank or card.
6 User Obligations on the Sun City 50 Plus Club Forum
(1) Users of the forum in the Sun City 50 Plus Club shall be solely responsible for the content of their profile.
(2) Entry of sexual, pornographic, offensive, politically radical or other illegal content in profiles is prohibited.
(3) Profiles may not be entered for third parties.
(4) No commercial advertising may be made in profiles for one’s own purposes or for third parties. This shall apply, including but not limited to, advertising for other Internet offerings and for advertising for service telephone numbers subject to charge.
(5) Profiles may not be entered for the purpose of collecting Email addresses for commercial use from the expected responses thereto.
(6) User shall have no legal claim to publication of his/her contents.
(7) Publication of family names, addresses, telephone numbers, fax numbers, URLs, Email addresses, or other possibilities to establish contact in profiles, forums or any other method to enable contacts to be made without using Sun City 50 Plus Club is prohibited.
(8) Any photos submitted to the Sun City 50 Plus Club for publication within a dating profile must be current and permit identification of the corresponding user. The entire face must be visible. Under no circumstances shall Sun City Europe be liable for the violation of possibly existing copyrights of third parties to such image material.
(9) User shall be solely responsible for replies to a profile.
(10) Each user shall handle as confidential all Emails and other messages or other information from users which he/she receives in connection with the use of dating facilities within the Sun City 50 Plus Club and not make these available to third parties without the approval of their originator. The same shall apply to names, telephone and fax numbers, postal and Email addresses and/or URLs of other users. Forwarding of any kind of data of non-members is also prohibited.
(11) Entry of sexual, pornographic, offensive, politically radical or other illegal contents in replies is prohibited. In addition, the following actions are also prohibited: threatening or harassment of others, violation of the rights (including the rights to privacy) of others, or the promising or demanding of money or services of monetary value.
(12) No commercial advertising may be made in replies for one’s own purposes or for third parties. This shall apply, including but not limited to, advertising for other Internet offerings and for advertising for service telephone numbers subject to charge.
(13) Sun City Europe checks profiles using its available possibilities to ensure their compliance with these Terms of Use. However, Sun City Europe shall not accept responsibility for the content of the profiles.
7 Termination of the Agreement, Cancellation
(1) User shall have the right to cancel the concluded Agreement at any time. However, user shall not be entitled to a refund of the fees paid to Sun City Europe.
(2) Should user violate these General Terms and Conditions, then Sun City Europe shall be entitled to block user access or to completely delete the corresponding profile at any time. In cases of doubt, Sun City Europe shall have the final right of decision in determining the permissibility of the use in question.
(3) If user access is blocked due to a breach of this Agreement, then the unused credit balances shall be allocated proportionately to the period of use to date and the according balance for use be retained by Sun City Europe, together with a lump sum processing fee of £20 GBP for the prevention of a violation of the Agreement.
(4) Sun City Europe may take legal action under UK civil law, if user, deliberately or with fraudulent intent, enters incorrect information in any questionnaire. Such user action shall lead to immediate cancellation of the Agreement with no refund of any kind of the fee paid to Sun City Europe.
(5) All Sun City Europe user data shall be deleted upon termination of the Agreement.
8 Limitations of Liability
(1) Sun City Europe shall assume no liability whatsoever for detriments incurred by members making entries for third parties as a result of use of its Internet platform.
(2) Sun City Europe shall also assume no liability in cases in which the functionality of its Internet platform is interrupted, impaired or destroyed by force majeure, strike, lock-out, operational disruptions, or externally caused interference with its structures.
(3) Sun City Europe excludes any kind of guarantee of the functionality of its communication platform and makes no warranties regarding the correctness, suitability, dependability, timeliness or accuracy of the information entered therein.
(4) Sun City Europe shall not be liable for the unauthorized acquisition of knowledge of user personal data by third parties (for example, via unauthorized access by ‘hackers’ to the Sun City 50 Plus Club database).
(5) Sun City Europe shall also not be liable for the case in which data and information, which users themselves made available to third parties, are misused by such third parties.
(6) Sun City Europe shall assume no responsibility for a possible delay, deletion, mis-transmission or storage system failure during communication between users or in connection with personally designed sections.
9 Changes of the General Terms and Conditions
(1) Sun City Europe reserves the right to change the General Terms and Conditions.
(2) User confirms his/her agreement with the application of the modified General Terms and Conditions to agreements already concluded prior to the change, provided that Sun City Europe notifies user that a change has been made to the General Terms and Conditions, and user does not object to the change within a time limit of 7 days, with such time limit beginning on the day following the notification of change.
(3) The notification of change must contain, in addition to information regarding availability of the modified text, information again describing the possibility of and time limit for raising an objection, as well as information on the significance and consequences of failing to raise an objection. The notification of change will be sent to the Email address provided by the user.
10 Other Provisions
(1) All Sun City 50 Plus Club content is protected by copyright. Copying of its contents, including but not limited to, user profiles or Email addresses and publication in another form, without the written approval of Sun City Europe, are prohibited.
(2) Sun City Europe shall assume no liability for damages to computer systems or personal inconveniences and detriments to Sun City 50 Plus Club users, which are attributable to the viewing and use of Sun City 50 Plus Club, a response to a profile, fault of the Internet provider or hosting provider of Sun City 50 Plus Club, or the call-up of external links (including advertising banners).
(3) Sun City Europe shall be entitled to exclude users from further use of individual or all Sun City 50 Plus Club offerings without adherence to a time limit or specification of reasons therefore. Sun City 50 Plus Club may also refuse individual profiles.
(4) Should an excluded user nevertheless make use of the Sun City 50 Plus Club Internet offering, for example, by assuming a different identity, then Sun City Europe reserves the right to take legal action in response.
(5) Sun City 50 Plus Club is operated solely at the discretion of Sun City Europe. Sun City Europe shall be entitled but not obligated to check the content of any kind of text, as well as each uploaded image, for compliance with the guidelines on which these provisions are based and, if necessary, to change or to delete these.
(6) The laws of the United Kingdom shall govern the contractual relationships between the parties.
(7) The sole place of jurisdiction shall be United Kingdom.
(8) Should individual provisions of these General Terms and Conditions be or become invalid, then this shall not affect the validity of the remaining provisions of these General Terms and Conditions. The invalid or incomplete provision shall be replaced or supplemented by a provision that comes as close as possible to the originally intended economic result.
